OUR Historical Significance
It is safe to say that Trinidadian Baptists’ (who are not “Shouter” persuasion) history dates back to the arrival of the “Merikins” in the years 1815- 1816 (some researchers would suggest that even the Shouters were birthed from the Merikin group).
Two hundred years ago a group of former American Black Slaves who had fought on the side of the British as marines in the American War (1812- 1814), were given their freedom and parcels of land (16 acres each) in British colonies including Trinidad, Jamaica and Bahamas. Among these ex- slaves were men who were describe as Anabaptist preachers. They not only brought their culture and faith but also sought to spread their faith to adjoining communities.
Due to their distance and the underdeveloped land they inhabited, the Merikins struggled to build the Company churches. Some thirty years later the Baptist Misssionary Society saw the need to visit these struggling Baptist churches and thus began the association with the English (London Baptist) brand of Baptist.
As a result of major disagreements regarding worship styles and issues related to structure and education, there was a separation which resulted in the adoption of the names “London Baptist” and “Independent Baptist”. The Independent separated further into other groups such as the Independent Baptist Missionary Union (IBMU) and the Independent International Baptist Church (IIBC).
In 1960, the Foreign Mission Board of the Suthern Baptist Convention of the United States of America came to Trinidad and Tobago. They worked closely with the London Baptists to establish churches in the north and south of Trinidad. This relationship also encountered problems and the subsequent departure gave rise to the establishment of the Trinidad and Tobago Baptist Association (TTBA).
In 1970, the first attempt at reconciliation and unity was made, the end result being the formation of the Trinidad and Tobago Baptist Federation (TTBF) comprising of London Baptists (BUTT), Independent Baptist Churches (IBMU, IIBC, IBM and MBEBC) and the TTBA.

Statement of Faith
wHAT WE BELIEVE

God the Father
We believe in one sovereign, all-knowing, all-powerful, omnipresent, perfect and hold God, eternally existing in three persons: the everlasting Father; His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ our Lord; and the Holy Spirit, the life giver and enabler. The triune God created all things out of nothing in accordance with His will and design and for His own glory. God has revealed Himself and His truth in the created order, in the Scriptures, and supremely in Jesus Christ.
God the Son
We believe that Jesus Christ was God incarnate, begotten by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, true God and true man existing sinlessly in one person. He lived a perfect life, died physically by crucifixion for our sins, rose bodily from the dead and, in due course ascended to heaven where He lived and reigns Lord of all, High Priest and Advocate.
God the Holy Spirit
We believe that the Holy Spirit is God dwelling with His people today. He convicts people of sin, regenerates the believing sinner, indwells, guides, instructs and empowers the believer for spiritual worship, godly living and acceptable service. The Spirit glorifies the Lord Jesus Christ, enables the believer to understand and apply the Scriptures, and imparts to member of the Body of Christ, the Church, all the gifts necessary for her work and witness in the world.
Humankind
We believe that God created humankind in His own image, as the crowning work of His creation. Persons are therefore beings of unique worth distinct from all other living creatures and designed with a capacity for meaningful relationships. God ordained from the beginning that people should live in families and He made the family the basic unit of a strong and stable society.
Sin and Salvation
We believe that our first parents were created innocent of sin but that, misusing their God-given capacity to choose, the disobeyed God and brought sin into the human race. Through the grace of a loving God the person separated from God by sin may, by the exercise of a personal faith in Jesus Christ, be restored to fellowship with God. In response to this faith alone, God offers the believer eternal life and enables him to advance from initial salvation, through sanctification in this life, to final glorification in the presence of God.
The Bible
We believe that the Old and New Testament Scriptures are inspired by God in their entirety. The Bible is a divine-human book which is fully trustworthy and is the supreme and final authority in all matters of life, faith and practice. Each believer needs to engage in a consistent lifelong study of the Scriptures and by prayer and meditation, hearing, interaction and application, discover for himself their truth and relevance for his daily life.
The Church
We believe that there is one holy, universal church composed of local communities of persons who have experienced saving faith in Jesus Christ. The task of the church in the world is to be God’s redeemed and redeeming community, embodying in its members the love of Christ, and empowered by the Holy Spirit through worship to proclaim in word and deed the gospel of God’s redemptive love to all earth’s peoples. The church, gathered or dispersed, must care for all of God’s creation; actively seek the good of everyone, but especially of the poor and helpless; and serve God’s royal priesthood representing God to mankind and mankind to God.
Ordinances of the Church
We believe that believer’s baptism and the Lord’s Supper are the ordinances to be observed by the Church and, while not means of salvation, they are channels of God’s blessing uniting all who receive them in faith.
Satan
We believe in the existence and baneful influence of the devil and other evil powers, but that the Holy Spirit empowers believers to experience victory in spiritual warfare against such powers. Their eventual defeat is already sealed by God through the cross and triumph of Jesus Christ.
Eschatology
We believe that Jesus Christ will return to earth visibly, and in power and glory, at God’s appointed time and in God’s appointed order. He will gather His elect, raise the dead, and summon all people to final judgement. Those who trusted in Jesus Christ shall receive their reward and enter into everlasting blessedness and joy in the presence of the Lord in heaven. Those who rejected Jesus Christ or chose to live in opposition to God’s revealed will shall receive their just punishment and spend eternity in Hell in a conscious state of separation from God. Thus, Jesus Christ will bring to fruition His eternal Kingdom of righteousness and peace.
